A strategy to help you deal with problems at work

When you are faced with problems at work it is an extremely stressful and difficult time.  You will ask yourself the questions, “what have I done wrong?”, “why me?”, “are they trying to get rid of me?”.  When these thoughts start to run through your head your emotions are rife and you may not be able to think straight and therefore not be able to put the situation into perspective.  If you are unfortunately faced with the situation of having a problem at work it is important that you talk to someone.  This may be your spouse, member of the family, friend, a colleague at work or your Union Representative.  Family and friends might not be able to solve the problem for you but they can certainly support you with the emotions you are feeling.  A valued friend of mine once told me, “you need to take the emotion out of it”.  He was absolutely right!  Seeking support and advice can help you do just that.  Having someone to look at policies, procedures and if necessary legalities takes the emotion out of the situation so that it then becomes a process.  Having someone guide you through the process is invaluable and they can offer you guidance on the best approach and if you do have a Union Representative they may be able to attend any meetings with you.  Keeping a level head when you are in this unfortunate situation is difficult so if nothing else please speak to someone who has some experience.
